How it works

One Order, three people, one horizon.

A customer on a towel, a bar behind its counter, a runner on the sand. Each has their own app, and all three see the same Order move through the same steps, in the same words.

The life of an Order

The life of an Order

In every app, progress is a sun travelling along a horizon line, always beside the step written out in words. Every step is recorded with who took it and when.

  1. NewCustomer

The customer sends the Order from their spot on the map. One basket with items from two bars becomes two Orders, one for each bar.

  2. AcceptedBar

The bar accepts it with a ready time, or refuses it with a reason. The customer can still cancel at this point.

  3. PreparingBar

The drink is being made. From here on, cancelling is a request to the bar.

  4. ReadyBar

The bar marks it ready, and it is offered to every runner on shift there at the same moment.

  5. Runner comingRunner

The first runner to tap claims it and walks to the bar. If nobody collects it in time, it goes back on offer.

  6. On the wayRunner

The runner has it and walks across the sand. The customer watches them come on the map.

  7. DeliveredRunner

The runner checks ID if the Order has alcohol, then enters the customer’s 4-digit code. The customer pays on arrival.

On the towel

For the customer: pick, wait, show a code

Open the app where you are lying. It shows what the bars around you serve, how far away they are, and what it costs to have it brought over. Send the Order and your position travels with it, for as long as the Order is open.
  • No address to type: your spot on the map, plus a note or a photo if the beach is busy
  • The time left in minutes, and the runner on the map once they set off
  • Nothing charged in the app: pay on arrival, tip after delivery

What a customer sees

Behind the bar

For the bar: answer, make it, mark it ready

New Orders arrive on a board with three columns, to answer, in the kitchen and for pickup, read from a metre away in the middle of a rush. The bar accepts with a ready time, marks the Order ready when it is, and sees which runner is coming.
  • An alarm that repeats until somebody acknowledges the Order
  • Unanswered Orders are refused for the bar, and the customer is told
  • Prices, fees, runners’ pay and cash all set and counted by the bar

On the sand

For the runner: claim, collect, hand over

Runners on shift at a bar see each ready Order as an offer with the distance and the pay, and a countdown drawn as a sun setting on the horizon. They claim it, collect it at the bar and follow the map to the towel.
  • Pay shown before the claim, locked once claimed, tips in full after delivery
  • The customer’s position, accuracy, note and photo on one screen
  • An ID check before any handoff code is accepted on an Order with alcohol

When it does not go to plan

What happens if…

  • …the bar does not answer?

The bar is alerted again at the answer deadline. Five minutes later the Order is refused for them, and the customer is told.

  • …no runner takes it?

The Order stays on offer, and the bar sees “No runner yet”. A claimed run that is not collected in time goes back on offer.

  • …the runner cannot find me?

They look at your position, note and photo, and write in the Order’s chat. If that fails, they tell the bar from the app.

  • …I change my mind?

Cancel in the app until the bar starts making it. After that, ask the bar to cancel.

  • …I have no ID for my drink?

The runner cannot complete an Order with alcohol without checking your ID, so have it with you when you order.

  • …the signal drops?

The last known state stays on screen with an offline banner, and taps are retried without doubling anything.
